Jan Bruce carving a stone sculpture on set of Make It At Market

TV Debut

2024 turned out to be quite a life-changing year for me, and things promise to change dramatically in March 2025 when I am due to appear on national television in the award-winning BBC1 show 'Make It At Market'.

I'll be seen in action, carving and talking about my life and work and my dreams for the future.

It all started at the end of 2023, when I was told about a tv program I ought to watch, called 'Make It At Market', featuring artists and craftspeople, including stonecarvers. I was so impressed that I made up my mind to apply for the next series if it happened.

By a lovely coincidence, the person who told me about it was the wonderful artist Myrtle Pizzey, who was responsible for starting me on my path as a sculptor over 40 years ago!

Early in 2024, the news came that applications were being taken. I applied and, after an agonising wait and selection process, I was amazed to be accepted!

Since then I have partially stepped back from my day job as an electrician to chase my dreams of becoming a full-time artist, or as near as possible.

My episode will air on Tuesday 18th March 2025 at 3.45pm on BBC1. I can't wait! (although I might have to watch it from behind the sofa!)

AN award-winning sculptor from Herefordshire is to star in a BAFTA-nominated BBC programme, exploring his true passion.

Jan Bruce, a sculptor from Garway, will be featured in an upcoming episode of Make It At Market, a BBC One series presented by the Repair Shop's Dominic Chinea.

The episode, set to air on March 18, will highlight Mr Bruce's journey as he strives to transform his passion for sculpture into a sustainable income, after spending nearly two decades working as an electrician to support his family.

Mr Bruce, who was awarded first prize in Herefordshire’s annual H.Art competition in 2024, has been honing his craft in his spare time.

Known for his "distinctive, emotive sculptures", his appearance on the show will offer viewers a "unique glimpse" into the life of a talented artist balancing creativity and financial stability.

For the past two decades, Mr Burce put his artistic dreams on hold.

Now, buoyed by his recent H.Art award, he’s "seizing" the opportunity to dedicate more time to his true passion and pursue a future as a full-time sculptor.

“I’m incredibly excited to be part of this series,” he said.

"The experience of working alongside other talented individuals and presenting my work to a wider audience has been both challenging and rewarding.

"This opportunity allows me to show what I can do and hopefully make a living from my sculptures.

"I hope my journey will inspire others to embrace the creative process and see the potential of turning their passion into a business. I can't wait for viewers to see the outcome!"
